The Science

Probiotics (pro = for, bios = life) are beneficial live bacteria that help the body crowd out bad bacteria.

Professor John Tagg discovered specific strains of ‘friendly’ bacteria have advanced ways of crowding out the bad bacteria, his work focuses on Streptococcus salivarius which is the most abundant bacteria in the mouth.  It normally resides in the mouths of healthy people and it is one indication of healthy immune function and natural resistance to bad bacteria  that enter through the mouth.

We know that most friendly bacteria work by ‘crowding out’ bad bacteria, thereby supporting our health. But certain types of bacteria also naturally produce additional substances made of peptides and proteins that inhibit the bad bacteria from coming back.

Blis probiotics – BLIS K12™ and BLIS M18™ – are these specific strains of Streptococcus salivarius – they are advanced probiotics because they not only crowd out the bad stuff – they inhibit them coming back when they are under threat.

These proteins are called Bacteriocin-like Inhibitory Substances and it is the inspiration for our company name and the name of our patented strains BLIS K12™and BLIS M18™.

Blis probiotics have been extensively safety-tested and have been commercially used now for more than 15 years. Streptococcus salivarius is the dominant organism in a healthy oral cavity. It’s found in breast milk and is listed as a Biosafety Level 1 (safest) organism in the USA.
