Skin Health

Our body is a living planet and the skin microbiome is the community of tiny inhabitants that live on your skin. This invisible community of microbes are a diverse bunch – a mix of viruses, bacteria and fungi, viruses and mites – and we have as many as 40 different species per individual.

skin microbiome balance

When your skin microbiome is balanced, with lots of diversity and good/bad bacteria, you are rewarded with healthy, happy skin. When the microbiome is out of balance, you will experience something known as “dysbiosis.”

This is when certain bacteria – the pathogenic kind – take hold and start causing havoc with your skin. The scientific names for some of these bad bugs are Staphylococcus aureus (linked to psoriasis, eczema, impetigo, athlete’s foot), Staphylococcus epidermidis and Cutibacterium acnes (linked to acne).

Before After

How is the skin microbiome being targeted?

Prebiotics
Prebiotics act as food sources for the good bacteria, promoting their growth. They are usually short-chain oligosaccharides or polysaccharides.
Probiotics
Products with probiotics have “good bacteria,” in the form of live cultures to increase the number of favorable bacteria on the skin.
Postbiotics
This involves the addition of the byproducts of probiotics or lysates to improve the composition of the skin’s beneficial bacteria, for example, by optimizing the skin pH.
How live probiotics can help

How live probiotics in skincare can help

Just like other probiotics for gut health and oral health, live probiotics in skincare can help to restore and balance the skin microbiome. With a balanced microbiome, the skin pH levels are optimal and the skin barrier is strong and robust, allowing skin to retain moisture and stay resilient against environmental stressors.
