Back to School: Boosting kids’ immunity and fighting upper respiratory illness

  • By BLIS
  • August 2023

Every parent knows all too well the challenges that come with coping with our children’s frequent illnesses. The impact of these relentless bouts of sickness goes beyond their well-being; they disrupt schooling, strain family dynamics, and even play havoc with our work schedules.

In this article, we will explore why kids get sick so often, the repercussions of these illnesses, and how maintaining optimal immunity can help address and reduce these challenges…for a happier, healthier home-life.

Additionally, we’ll discuss the potential benefits of using BLIS K12™, an oral probiotic strain known for supporting kids’ immunity and Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) health.

Why are Kids More Susceptible to Upper Respiratory Illnesses?

Children tend to get sick more often than adults due to a combination of factors related to their developing immune systems and their environment. Here are some reasons why:

  • Immature immune system: Immune systems in children are still maturing, resulting in reduced efficiency in fighting off pathogens. Their immune responses may not be as robust as those of adults, leaving them more vulnerable to viruses and bacteria.

  • Close contact: Kids often interact closely with peers in schools and daycare settings, increasing the likelihood of exposure to infectious agents.

  • Exploratory behaviour: Young children tend to touch objects, surfaces, and their faces frequently, potentially introducing harmful microbes into their bodies.

  • Weaker Physical Barriers: Children generally have smaller airways and nasal passages, which can make it easier for respiratory viruses to enter and infect their respiratory system.

  • Less Immune Memory: As we age, we accumulate more immune memory from past exposures to infections, giving kids less protection than adults against some illnesses.

The Impact of Frequent Illness for Kids and Families

The common cold is one of the most common illnesses for children. On average, young children experience between 6 and 10 colds per year, while older children may have around 2 to 4 colds annually.

As well as being stressful and exhausting, there’s also the socio-economic impact to consider. From purchasing cough syrup to the loss of productive time at work and school, catching a common cold can result in significant expenses.

In the US, studies suggest that the annual cost of the common cold ranges between 25-40 billion USD, with approximately 70-120 million workdays lost each year. Surprisingly, the socio-economic costs of the common cold surpass even more severe health conditions such as asthma, heart failure, and emphysema, which are often given more attention. {Source:“Productivity Losses Related to the Common Cold” (JOEM, vol. 44, no. 9, pp. 822-9, Sept. 2002) and “The Economic Burden of Non–-Influenza-Related Viral Respiratory Tract Infection in the United States” (Arch Intern Med., 2003; 163 (4): 487-494).}

Apart from the strain on government healthcare budgets, the excessive use of antibiotics to treat common cold and flu-like symptoms also contributes to the development of antibiotic resistance, a growing public health concern.

Strategies to Boost Kids’ Immunity

To reduce the frequency and severity of illnesses in children, parents can implement the following strategies:

Balanced nutrition: Provide a well-rounded diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins to support immune function.

Regular physical activity: Encourage children to engage in age-appropriate physical activities to enhance their immune response.

Adequate sleep: Ensure children get sufficient sleep as it plays a vital role in immune system function and overall health.

Proper hygiene practices: Teach kids about the importance of handwashing, covering their mouths when coughing or sneezing, and avoiding sharing personal items.

Probiotic Supplements for Kids’ Immunity:

Proven probiotic ingredients such as BLIS K12™, can be an additional tool to support children’s immunity and upper respiratory health. BLIS K12™ is a special strain of beneficial bacteria known for their positive impact on ENT health:

Strengthened natural defences: BLIS K12™ has been researched for its potential to enhance immune function, reducing the incidence and severity of respiratory tract infections.

Balancing oral microbiota: This probiotic strain helps maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in the oral cavity, supporting overall ENT health and minimizing the risk of certain infections.

Convenience and safety: Within a dietary supplement format, BLIS K12™ provides a convenient way to introduce beneficial bacteria into children’s diets, promoting a healthy immune system.

Clinical Evidence for BLIS K12™ Helping Kids Fight Illness

Summary

Frequent illnesses in children have significant implications for their education, parents’ work schedules, and overall family well-being. By understanding the reasons behind kids’ susceptibility to illnesses and implementing effective strategies to boost immunity, parents can help reduce the frequency and severity of infections. Additionally, probiotic strains like BLIS K12™, known for its potential benefits in supporting kids’ immunity and ENT health, may provide an extra layer of support for their overall well-being.
